Design and Technology

“Design is not just what it looks like and what it feels like, but how it works”

Steve Jobs

"Design and Technology encourages children's creativity and encourages them to think about important issues.”

D & T Association.

At St Joseph’s we aim to provide all children with a broad and balanced curriculum which prepares them for life beyond primary education. We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.

Design and Technology is a practical subject which aims to inspire pupils as children learn to think creatively and solve problems. It can be found in many of the objects children use each day and is a part of children’s immediate experiences.  This can be either as an individual or as part of a team.

At St Joseph’s, Design and Technology is in line with the National Curriculum and supported by Kapow learning to deliver high quality sessions.  We combine skills, concepts and values which enable children to experience real life problems.  We aim to make links where possible with other disciplines such as mathematics, science, computing and art.

Our curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

· develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.

· build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.

· critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products, as well as  the work of others as part of focused practical tasks.

· understand and apply the principles of nutrition through designing and preparing or cooking foods.

We also invite Hepp DT in each year to work with each class to complete a Design and Technology make in a day! The child are always extremely proud of their creations and love showing family and friends when they take them home!
