Music

We aim to make music an enjoyable learning experience for all our children. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence of all children. We aim for children to gain a good understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing and composing across a wide variety of periods, styles, traditions and musical genres.

Years 1, 3 and 6 teachers deliver music lessons using the GetSet4Music scheme to guide their teaching. From a young age, pupils are exposed to melody and song, beginning with our nursery, where routines are regularly sung and chanted and a weekly song and rhyme time is experienced. Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to sing in tune and with other people. Through singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music. We teach them to listen and to appreciate different forms of music. Children develop descriptive skills in music lessons when learning about how music can represent feelings and emotions. We teach them the disciplined skills of recognising pulse and pitch. We teach the children how to work with others to compose music and perform for an audience. Children begin to learn music theory and how to interpret music in different genres.

We have whole school singing once a week during Singing Assembly, and an after school performing arts club who regularly perform through a variety of events such as at the local care home and concerts arranged by Rotherham Music Service. Our Year 5 class have weekly ukulele lessons provided by Rotherham Music Service and Year 2 and 4 have weekly music lessons with Mr Edge from our Diocese to learn music theory and sing songs linked to the liturgical calendar. As well as this, all pupils have opportunities for private music lessons in school. Music is often incorporated into other subjects in our school, for example using instrumental pieces to inspire written work in literacy, or the discussion and evaluation of hymn lyrics in Religious Education.
